Purpose of job:
To lead the development of a newly-created C.I.C. by working with community stakeholders and the board of directors to develop and implement a strategic vision. The Consortium Director (CD) will need to build strong relationships with stakeholders including researchers, community groups, research institutes, universities, industry, government bodies, and funders. The CD will be responsible for developing a 5yr plan to meet the primary objects of the Consortium: to address the underrepresentation of Black researchers in academic and industry environments.

Despite the overrepresentation of Black students in higher education (8% overall compared to the UK population of 4%), researchers with Black heritage are underrepresented in the research environment (illustrated in the academy where Black professors comprise 1% of all professors). Baroness McGregor-Smith’s 2018 review “Race in the Workplace” illustrates the impact of underrepresentation stating that “If BME (Black and Minority Ethnic) talent is fully utilised, the economy could receive a £24 billion boost”. Too often, Black employees are excluded in the workplace which has negative implications for individuals as well as for research outcomes and the economy.

As BRC’s first employee this is a unique opportunity to shape and develop the direction of an organisation looking to tackle this under-addressed area: the underrepresentation of Black Researchers. This is a transformative opportunity to build and lead a mission-driven team and organization dedicated to tackling systemic inequities in research. As Consortium Director, you will work collaboratively internally and externally as well as work closely with an external evaluation team to drive impactful change for Black Researchers.
